The Centering Black Children in Education (CBCE) Initiative
In 2021, Dr. Rema founded the Centering Black Children in Education (CBCE) initiative to empower Black children through advocacy, wellness, and leadership development. CBCE’s mission is to create a space for Black children, their families, and educators to come together and engage in dialogue about the educational system, identify harmful policies, and advocate for systemic changes that benefit Black students.
CBCE hosts a free virtual conference annually that brings together thought leaders, educators, and community members worldwide. The event emphasizes celebrating Black children and the importance of pushing back against harmful educational practices. Rema Vassar has created a “fugitive space” through CBCE, where resistance against the marginalization of Black children is centered, and advocacy for transformative educational changes is encouraged.
